Uni Norths OWLS Launch Indigenous Jersey

Uni Norths OWLS Launch Indigenous Jersey

The Uni Norths Owls Rugby Club will launch their Indigenous Jersey on Saturday, 27 May 2023, during Reconciliation Week.

The jersey will be proudly worn in the round 7 fixture against the Queanbeyan Whites at the Owls home ground – ANU North Oval.

The artwork was created by talented Nukunu woman Amy Daniel, who was playing at the Club when she created the design. While Amy has now moved from Canberra, she still remains a strong and much loved member of the Owls family.

Through the artwork Amy wanted to connect the players with their own shared journey at the Club while building positive conversations about indigenous heritage.

“…. Pretty much it means everyone is coming together from different places. The men and women are coming together to be as one family/club. The animal tracks are kangaroo tracks representing the journey of everyone’s life through the club. The stars represent past members/players from the club watching over us……”

Uni Norths Owls Welfare and Cultural Ambassador Michael Axelsen is excited. “This is a wonderful occasion for the club and it has been great to work with Amy in bringing this to life.  The club wants this to be more than tokenism, and the jersey to be a tangible part of creating ongoing conversations and learnings of indigenous culture.”

“……Being a university club, we bring many new people together from different cultures each year and we all work at creating a safe and welcoming environment.  Acknowledging and learning more about our first nations peoples, wearing this jersey with pride and playing great footy, helps bring everyone at the club on that shared journey.”

The Owls Club looks forward to welcoming Ngunnawal elder Dr Caroline Hughes to give the Welcome to Country on match day before the Womens XV kick off at 1.40pm.
