Vale Teddy Kaye

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Ted Kaye. Ted was widely revered in ACT rugby circles as one of the best players of the 60s and 70s.

BIOGRAPHY:  TED KAYE

1959. Played First grade in Wagga Wagga Teachers College Team.

Norths Playing History

1960. Played in Norths First Grade Team as a Half Back or Five Eighth under the coaching of Bob Jones.

1961. Played in Norths First Grade as a Half Back with Bob Jones as Coach. Won the ACTRU Tommy Byrne Trophy for best and fairest In the John I Dent Cup Competition (this award downgraded with the advent of the Macdougall Medal which is awarded to the best player in the John I Dent Cup competition).

1962. Played in Norths First Grade under the coaching of Bill O’Brien.

1963.   Played in Premiership winning First Grade Team coached by Bill O’Brien. (Editorial note This was the year that ACTRU President Alan Ryan (unfortunately wrongly) stated that he expected that the Ted Kaye – Stan Melville combination would be playing for the Wallabies in 1964)

1964. Played in Norths First Grade Team which lost the Grand Final to Royals. Bill O’Brien was the Coach.

1965. Played in losing First Grade Grand Final Team against Royals (Editorial Note: This was the infamous match where Ted scored a try which was not seen by the referee and the ball was kicked away before it could be sighted by the ref. The match was lost 6-3 with Bill O’Brien being the coach

1966. Played in losing First Grade Final Team versus Royals. Coach was Des Ross and score 22-19.

1967. Played in Premiership winning First Grade Team coached by Des Ross.

1968-1969. Played in First Grade teams coached by Des Ross (1968) and Hugh Payne (1969). In1968 was awarded the ACTRU Anderson Trophy for Sportsmanship.

Switched to play as a Breakaway in Michael Hickey coached First Grade Teams in 1970-71 including being a member of 1971 Premiership winning team.

1972 Second Grade Coach. Played in various lower Grade teams as a Breakaway in 1972-73 when he then retired.

Ted Kaye has officially been recognised as an Owls centurion having played over 100 First Grade Games for Norths. He was recognised as an all-time great player in the Kevin Browning Golden Jubilee Norths team and, more importantly, he was nominated as the Half Back in the all-time Norths Greats Team during the Owls 80th Anniversary of John  I Dent Cup Celebrations of 2018.

Representative History

Ted had a significant representative career for the ACT. The book From Chook Raffles to Super 12’s by Rod Christopher shows the following:

1961-62. Represented the ACT, the Coach being R G Turner.

1963- 64. Represented the ACT, the Coach being J D Stevenson.

1965-66. Represented the ACT, the Coach being J W Maguire.

1967-68.  Represented the ACT, the Coach being J D Stevenson.
