Match report: Owls women reclaim second place with exciting win over Viqueens
The Uni-Norths Owls bounced back in style in Round 16, overpowering the Tuggeranong ViQueens 24–12 in a physically demanding match at Viking Park to leap back into second place on the Bentspoke Premier 15s ladder.
Played under overcast skies with greasy conditions underfoot, both sides leaned on their forward packs in a match defined by tight carries, big collisions, and some brutal defence. The Owls front row was dominant throughout the contest, laying a strong platform at scrum time, while the back row, led by Crystal Papalii and Emily Carroll, was tireless around the park.
The first half was a tight arm-wrestle, but the Owls found reward early when Liana Taufa’ao scored in the 12th minute. Emerina Marsh-Kiro put a clever little kick in behind the Viqueens’ defence, and Taufa’ao showed great skill to chase and ground it in the try zone.
Fifteen minutes later, Emerina Marsh-Kiro busted her way through traffic to land Owls their second try, while Madeleine Gogala successfully converted.
Crystal Papalii added a third in the 35th minute, continuing her barnstorming form from last week. Another pinpoint conversion from Gogala took the Owls into the break with a healthy lead.
The second half saw the Owls lift in intensity, particularly at the breakdown where Jess Grant and Meilani Salale disrupted the Viqueens’ ball all afternoon. Ellie Brislane and Sophie Tuilagi combined in the centres to punch holes in the midfield, while Jane Garraway’s game management at scrumhalf kept the tempo high.
The match-sealer came at the 40-minute mark of the second half, with tighthead prop Benita Ese Sale finishing a powerful run to score a try and help seal the win.
While the Viqueens pushed hard throughout the game, they were repeatedly repelled by the Owls’ scramble defence. The set piece proved a consistent weapon, and the Owls’ ability to finish key chances was the difference in a match that could well be repeated in the finals.
The result puts the Owls back in second spot, with one round remaining in the regular season.
