Owls Women Honoured on WIN News Canberra

The Uni-Norths Owls Women’s program received a powerful nod last night as WIN News Canberra aired a feature segment celebrating the unveiling of the club’s inaugural Women’s International Honour Board.

The story, which went to air on Tuesday 23 July, captured highlights from the event held at The Barn, where past and present internationals were officially recognised for their achievements on the world stage. Head Women’s Coach, Andrew Balmaks, and manager, Katy Balmaks, spoke to the depth of talent and culture in the Owls women’s program, with Katy calling the Honour Board “long overdue.”

Fourteen international players were recognised, with seven in attendance on the night:
Ashleigh Fernandez, Emerena Marsh-Aviga, Georgia O’Neill, Iris Verebalavu, Lydia Ratu Kavoa, Faitala Moleka, and Tania Naden.

The WIN News coverage showcased heartfelt moments, historic footage, and interviews with those who’ve helped drive the women’s game forward, cementing the Owls’ status as a powerhouse for women’s rugby in Canberra.

Former Wallaroos captain Grace Hamilton, who played her first season of rugby with the Owls in 2014, shared her reflections on the milestone:

“My time at Uni Norths was hands down some of the best times I’ve had at a club — on and off the field. Still to this day I look back and wish I could go back to the days at The Barn and The RUC. Such great people and some of my best friends even to this day.
I’m grateful for my time there. As a young inside centre, Branches (club legend) was the first person to put me in the back row and I never looked back.
He kick-started my rugby journey and being an Owl will always hold such a special place in my heart. 2014 will forever be my favourite season!
Take us back! HOOT HOOT!”

Former Wallaroo, Georgia O’Neill, also paid tribute to the program:

“Playing rugby for the Uni North Owls has been an amazing, unforgettable journey filled with opportunities and gratitude. I played my first Owls game at 17 when I just came out of college.
The Owls laid the foundation for my rugby career, providing rigorous training and a supportive environment. This led me to represent the Brumbies at a national level, fulfilling my dream, and even compete internationally with the Wallaroos in 2018.
I’m thankful for all my teammates and coaches over the last 10 years. Uni North Owls will always be my family.
Thank you to everyone involved who made the inaugural Honour Board at The Barn possible — what a beautiful night to be part of and remembered by for our club.”
