The Uni-Norths Owls Performance Squad, featuring our 1st and 2nd Grade players, took to Portsea Oval, Duntroon on Saturday for a friendly scrimmage trial against Sydney University. This session provided a vital opportunity for both clubs to fine-tune their set-piece execution and attacking structures ahead of the 2025 season.

The day was structured to maximise positional matchups, beginning with forwards engaging in rigorous lineout contests. Both packs were relentless in their pursuit of dominance, with the Owls showcasing technical improvement in their set-piece stability and timing.

While the forwards battled up front, the backs took to the field to sharpen their attacking systems. With each team running structured plays, the Owls’ backline demonstrated fluid ball movement and well-timed support lines. The session was invaluable in building cohesion and refining decision-making under pressure.

The scrimmage concluded with a 15-on-15 semi-contact ‘bodies in front’ game, simulating live match conditions while maintaining a controlled environment. This final phase allowed players to apply their set-piece and backline work in an integrated team setting, testing their ability to execute under realistic pressure. The Owls displayed strong defensive organisation and attacking creativity, laying a solid foundation for their upcoming fixtures.

1st Grade player, Sam Mickelson, reflected on the session, saying, “Over the weekend, Owls welcomed Sydney University down to Canberra for an opposed training session. It was a great chance to refine the hard work put in during preseason and develop leading into upcoming trial matches. Owls wish to thank Sydney University and wish them success in the 2025 Shute Shield competition.”

With this valuable hit-out under their belts, the Owls Performance Squad now turns their attention to the trial game against Manly/Two Blues, ready to build on their momentum and continue their push for success in 2025.
